Accessibility
Accessibility is not an afterthought at Jorts β it is part of how we build. We are committed to ensuring our website is usable by everyone, regardless of ability or the technology they use to browse.
Our Commitment
We have built jorts.uk with accessibility as a core principle. Our goal is to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA standard, and we are continuously working toward that goal. We believe an inclusive web is a better web β for everyone.
What We Have Done
We have implemented a wide range of accessibility features throughout our site:
- Semantic HTML β Our pages use proper heading structure, landmark regions (
header, main, nav, footer), and native HTML elements so screen readers can navigate easily. - Keyboard navigation β Every interactive element on our site β buttons, links, menus, size selectors, color swatches β can be accessed and operated using a keyboard alone.
- Skip to content β A skip link is available at the top of every page, allowing keyboard users to bypass the navigation and jump directly to the main content.
- ARIA labels and roles β We use ARIA attributes throughout the site to communicate the purpose and state of interactive elements to assistive technologies, including screen readers.
- Visible focus indicators β All focusable elements display a clear visible focus ring when navigated to by keyboard, so you always know where you are on the page.
- Colour contrast β Our colour palette has been selected and tested to meet WCAG AA contrast ratios for text legibility.
- Alternative text β All meaningful images on our site include descriptive alt text. Decorative images are marked appropriately so screen readers can skip them.
- Screen reader support β We use screen-reader-only text where needed to provide context that is visually implied but not explicitly stated.
- Reduced motion β For users who prefer reduced motion, we honour the
prefers-reduced-motionmedia query and disable non-essential animations. - Dynamic announcements β When you select a size or colour on a product page, the change is announced to screen readers via an ARIA live region.
- Language declaration β The language of each page is declared in the HTML, helping screen readers use the correct voice and pronunciation.
- Multi-store hreflang β Our four regional stores (US, AU, NZ, UK) use correct hreflang tags so assistive technologies and search engines serve the right version to each user.
Known Limitations & Ongoing Work
We are transparent about where we are still improving. Accessibility is a continuous journey, not a one-time fix. Some areas we are actively working on include:
- Further ARIA refinements on dynamic content areas
- Extended keyboard interaction patterns as new features are added
- Formal third-party accessibility audit β planned for a future update
We will update this page as improvements are made.
Third-Party Content
Some parts of our experience β including the checkout process and order tracking β are handled by third-party platforms. While we choose partners who take accessibility seriously, we cannot fully control their implementations. If you encounter a barrier on a third-party page, please let us know and we will do our best to help or advocate for a fix.
Standards & Guidelines
We reference the following standards in our accessibility work:
- Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 β published by the W3C Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI)
- WAI-ARIA 1.2 β for semantic roles, states, and properties
- HTML Living Standard β for semantic, native HTML elements
